The Tool Missing From the World's Best Training Tech Stacks

2026 Training MVP Awards data: elite orgs average 150 instructors but lack a training operations platform — delivery runs on tools never built for it.

Written byUpdated July 2026

Training magazine just named the winners of the 2026 Training MVP Awards — its 26th annual ranking of the top employee training programs in the world. The most interesting part isn't the ranking; it's the aggregate data behind it, which shows that even elite training organizations run instructor-led delivery on tools that were never built for it.

Ninety-one organizations made the 2026 list, led by Southern New Hampshire University, Allianz Life, JLL, Panda Restaurant Group, and Hayes Locums in the top 5. Congratulations to every winner — these are the programs the rest of the industry benchmarks against, and the recognition is well earned.

But Training magazine publishes aggregate statistics on the winners each year, and the 2026 numbers tell a clear story about how elite training organizations operate — and where the cracks are.

The scale is enormous

The average winner trained 70,496 employees last year. To deliver that, they employed a mean of 78 full-time trainers and 70 part-time trainers — roughly 150 instructors per organization.

Think about what it takes to coordinate 150 instructors across tens of thousands of learners: matching the right instructor to the right session, scheduling around availability and time zones, distributing materials and conference links, sending reminders, tracking attendance, and reporting on outcomes. At this scale, delivery logistics is a full-time operation in itself.

The investment is serious

These aren't scrappy programs running on leftover budget. The average winner generates $5 billion in U.S. revenue ($9 billion worldwide) and spends $13 million a year on training — 5.4% of payroll.

That level of investment reflects a belief that training drives business results. And the winners back it up: 99% measure effectiveness across all four Kirkpatrick levels, and 60% tie manager compensation to developing their direct reports.

The tech stack has a hole in it

Here's where it gets interesting. Training magazine also reports on the technology infrastructure these winners use:

  • Learning management system: 100%
  • Talent management system: 92%
  • Workforce management system: 91%

Notice what's missing? Nothing on that list is purpose-built for training operations.

An LMS is built to host content and track completions. A talent management system handles performance and succession. A workforce management system handles staffing and time. None of them were designed to run the delivery side of instructor-led training: scheduling sessions, sourcing and matching instructors, managing logistics, and handling learner communications. (We've written a full breakdown of the TMS vs LMS distinction— it's the most misunderstood line in the training stack.)

Which means even the best-funded, most sophisticated training organizations in the world are most likely running instructor-led delivery out of tools that were never built for it — stitched together with spreadsheets, calendars, and email threads.

The takeaway

The 2026 MVP winners prove that world-class training doesn't require enormous teams. It requires lean teams operating with serious infrastructure behind them. The programs that scale aren't the ones with the best content. They're the ones that solved delivery.

That's the gap we're building TryTami to close: an AI-powered training operations platform — a TMS platform built for instructor-led programs. TryTami handles scheduling, instructor matching, logistics, and communications — so training teams can launch a new instructor-led class in under an hour instead of duct-taping operations onto their LMS.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Training MVP Awards?

The Training MVP Awards are Training magazine's annual ranking of organizations that excel at employee training and development — 2026 marked the 26th year. Rankings are based on quantitative and qualitative scoring of factors like training investment, program scope, alignment to business goals, and measured effectiveness. Ninety-one organizations made the 2026 list.

What technology do top training organizations use?

Per Training magazine's 2026 winner data: 100% run a learning management system, 92% a talent management system, and 91% a workforce management system. Notably absent is anything purpose-built for training operations — the scheduling, instructor coordination, and logistics behind instructor-led delivery.

Why isn't an LMS enough for instructor-led training?

An LMS is built to host content and track completions. It was not designed to schedule live sessions, match and coordinate instructors, manage delivery logistics, or handle the communications around live training — so organizations end up running that side on spreadsheets, calendars, and email.

What is a training operations platform?

A training operations platform (or training management system) runs the delivery side of instructor-led training: session scheduling, instructor sourcing and matching, availability, materials and logistics, learner communications, and delivery reporting — connected in one system of record that complements the LMS rather than replacing it.
